Examination Structure

The Civil Services Examination consists of three stages:

Detailed Examination Scheme

A. Preliminary Examination

  • Two papers of objective type (multiple-choice questions), each carrying 200 marks.
    • Paper I: General Studies (GS)
    • Paper II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – Minimum qualifying marks: 33%
    • Negative Marking: 0.33 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.
  • The Preliminary Examination is a screening test only. Marks obtained are not counted for the final ranking.

B. Main Examination

The Main Examination comprises 9 papers:

  • Qualifying Papers:
    • Paper A: Indian Language (300 Marks)
    • Paper B: English (300 Marks)
      (Note: These are of Matriculation or equivalent standard and qualifying in nature)
  • Papers for Merit Calculation:
    • Paper I: Essay (250 Marks)
    • Papers II to V: General Studies (GS-I to GS-IV), 250 Marks Each
    • Papers VI & VII: Optional Subject (Paper 1 and Paper 2), 250 Marks Each
    • Total Marks (Written Examination): 1750 Marks
    • Interview/Personality Test: 275 Marks
    • Grand Total: 2025 Marks

Optional Subjects for Main Examination

Candidates can choose one optional subject from the following list:

Key Notes for Main Examination

  • Language Papers (Paper A and B): Minimum qualifying marks: 25% in each.
  • Medium of Examination: Candidates can answer in any Eighth Schedule language or English, except for the language papers, which must be written in the respective language.
  • Exemptions: Paper A is exempt for candidates from specific states (e.g., Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim) or for PwBD candidates under certain conditions.
